OUR NEWS

Principles of social and psychological rehabilitation of people who participated in hostilities and armed conflicts

Social and psychological rehabilitation of individuals who have participated in armed conflicts and military actions is based on several key principles. Here are some of them:
  • 1. Humanitarian approach: This principle prioritizes the dignity and well-being of the affected individuals. Rehabilitation programs should aim to alleviate suffering and restore independence and quality of life for the survivors.

  • 2. Individualization: Each person has unique needs, experiences, and reactions to the war conflict. Rehabilitation programs should be tailored to the individual needs and capabilities, providing personalized counseling and support.

    • 3. Trajectory of recovery: Rehabilitation interventions should support the process of recovery, which involves a gradual sequence of stages to achieve psychological and social rehabilitation. These stages may include event acknowledgment, meaning-making, ensuring safety, rebuilding interpersonal relationships, professional rehabilitation, and others.

    • 4. Comprehensive approach: Rehabilitation programs should encompass various aspects of recovery, such as psychological support, psychotherapy, psychiatric assistance, and social integration.

  • By adhering to these principles, social and psychological rehabilitation endeavors aim to restore the well-being and promote the successful reintegration of individuals affected by armed conflicts and military engagements.

A holistic approach to social and psychological rehabilitation means that programs and services should cover different aspects of recovery to provide full and in-depth support to people affected by hostilities and armed conflicts. The main components of this approach include the following elements:

Psychological Support.
Psychiatric Assistance.
Social Reintegration.
Physical Rehabilitation.

Psychological rehabilitation

Psychological rehabilitation is aimed at restoring and maintaining the psychological well-being of people who have participated in hostilities and armed conflicts. It aims to help victims overcome psychological trauma, stress, anxiety and other psychological problems that may arise as a result of the experience of combat.

Psychological rehabilitation includes a number of methods and approaches, such as:

  • Psychotherapy: Individual or group sessions with a professional psychologist or psychotherapist help survivors to understand and process their emotions, restore psychological balance, and develop effective stress management strategies.
  •
  • Psychosocial support: Providing emotional and practical support through interactions with other survivors, family, community, and caregivers helps build resilience and increase well-being after a traumatic experience.
  •
  • Information and education: Affected persons receive the necessary information about the psychological consequences of military conflicts, coping strategies, self-regulation skills and other resources that can help them recover.
  •
  • Resource development: Resource development in the context of psychological rehabilitation means supporting and strengthening the positive aspects of the personality and internal resources of the affected person that can be used to overcome difficulties and achieve psychological well-being. This includes the following aspects:
  •
  •

    A. Identification of strengths:
Helping an individual to identify and use their unique strengths, skills, and talents. This may include focusing on the positive aspects of the individual and developing their potential.

  •

    B. Development of regulatory strategies:

  • Teaching survivors effective strategies for managing stress, anxiety and emotions. This may include relaxation skills, meditation, breathing techniques and other self-regulation methods.

  •

    C. Supporting self-esteem
Promoting and supporting positive self-esteem and self-determination. Helping the person to realize their value, achievements and capabilities.

  •

    D. Promotion of social connections:
Supporting the establishment and maintenance of positive social connections and supportive interactions with others. This may include group therapy, shared activities, and interactions that foster a supportive social network.

The resource development aims to actively engage survivors in their own recovery process and provide them with tools to overcome difficulties.

Psychiatric care is aimed at diagnosing, treating, and managing mental disorders that may arise as a result of traumatic experiences.

  • Diagnosis: The psychiatrist conducts a comprehensive assessment of the victim’s mental state by collecting medical history, observations, psychiatric examination, and using additional diagnostic tools. This helps to establish a diagnosis and an understanding of the mental problems faced by the victim.
  •
  • Medication treatment: A psychiatrist may prescribe medications to treat various mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and others. Medications can be used to reduce symptoms, improve mood, and ensure mental stability.
  •

Psychotherapy: Psychiatrists may provide psychotherapy sessions or recommend that the survivor see a professional psychotherapist. This may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy, and other approaches aimed at understanding and overcoming mental health problems.

!!! The rehabilitation center is not a medical institution, therefore, if there are signs of mental disorders, a person will be assisted in contacting the appropriate medical institutions !!!

Social Reintegration

Social integration is aimed at helping affected persons return to normal life, including their reintegration into society, work and social interaction.

The main aspects of social integration include:

Vocational rehabilitation: This involves developing and implementing a vocational rehabilitation plan for the affected individuals. This plan may include training in new professional skills, advanced training, job search support, internships, and other activities aimed at integrating into the work environment.

Social support: Those affected can receive support from social workers, group support sessions, communities and organizations that specialize in supporting veterans or survivors. This can include providing information, counseling, support in solving practical problems and creating social connections.

Psychosocial rehabilitation: This aspect involves getting skills that will help the affected person to function successfully in their daily life. This can include communication skills, stress management, problem solving, planning, and so on.

Physical Rehabilitation

For people who have sustained physical injuries as a result of hostilities, it is important to provide medical care, physiotherapy and rehabilitation procedures. These measures are aimed at alleviating pain, restoring functional skills, improving mobility and maximizing the independence of the affected persons.

Physiotherapists offer special exercises and treatments to help restore muscles, joints and motor skills. This may include exercise, massage, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, and other methods, taking into account the specific needs and capabilities of each individual.

Re-adaptation to physical activity and the acquisition of new skills can include individualized training, assistance with the selection of adaptive devices, and reconstruction of the environment to support mobility and independence.

Targeted physical rehabilitation helps to restore physical functionality, improve the quality of life and maintain the independence of the affected persons.
